Weekly English Tasks (plus daily reading)

Writing Task
.
Continue writing a recount of your memories whilst at Carlton. Remember to begin by working through each year group you have been here and bullet point the memories from that class - this will form your plan. The number of years you have been at Carlton will determine the number of paragraphs you will have. Look back on these times by talking to you friends as the talk will prompt further memories. (Make notes of your conversations if you need to.)

First, get your plan together -most of you will have done this but remember words and phrases NOT full sentences for this - now move on to drafting where you will begin to expand your points into full sentences. Think carefully about how you will introduce your recount - it need only be a couple of sentences. See the links below for help with organising your ideas and the features of a recount.
Once your draft is done, proof read it carefully using a ruler to slow you down and help you to focus on each word, phrase and sentence. look for things that need improving (check out the list that Chloe has put together to help you).

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS AS WE WOULD DO IN CLASS TO SHARE MEMORIES AND GET YOUR IDEAS GOING

Spellings: unstressed vowels revision

Unstressed vowels are vowel letters that we either do not sound, or we do not sound very distinctly (replace with a schwa), as we speak. This is why unstressed vowels cause spelling problems as they are easy to forget and miss them out.

For example: memory
Memory often sounds like memry because the vowel is an unstressed vowel.

Activity: investigate unstressed vowels. Start by highlighting those in the Year 5/6 spelling word lists. Copy out then circle those in the words below:

jewellery    poisonous    voluntary    explanatory    company    difference    reference

literature    victory          mystery       boundary       factory        slippery       ordinary

history        machinery   business      frightened      widening    interest        separately

Science:
This week is revision of Classification. Who was Carolus Linnaeus?

Watch the video then complete the quiz.
Activity: Focus on the Animal Kingdom; how is this divided into two groups? Think about the vertebrate group; how is this divided into its five groups? Here is a diagram to help you:

Compile a list of features for each of the five types of vertebrates which identify why an animal would be placed in that group. Compare your list with your friends - have you missed any?

PSHCE:

The Archbishop of York Youth Trust (the organisation behind the Archie Project -Young Leader's Award) has launched four sessions to help you to continue to be Young Leaders in these challenging times below are links to the first two. We will do the second two next week. I hope you enjoy doing these as you made brilliant Young Leaders in Year 5.

Computing:
It is really important that when you use any technology you do it safely.
Below are links to information and activities to do with using the internet and phones safely.
You could maybe design a poster encouraging safe use of technology.

Picture News -

Story: A red, white and blue paint job on the Prime Minister's plane has recently been revealed.

Question: How important are first impressions?

Dam a stream:What could be better on a warm day than getting into the stream and trying to block it? Just collect twigs, branches, stones and rocks to stop the flow of water.

Thank you to those of you who are emailing some of your work and activities to me. If you haven't sent anything in yet, I would love to see what you are doing. Please email photos to:
