Raphael's home schooling

Raphael has worked on his PSHCE activity, sharing the wonderful things about himself.

He has also completed the science work which he thoroughly enjoyed due to his great interest in animals (especially exotic ones).

Raphael used his computing skills to share his work on time zones - this is brilliant Raphael and shows your understanding well. I know Mrs Mackintosh will be very pleased with your French Bastille Day work.

Keep up the hard work Raphael - you are impressing us all!

Summer Term Week 10

Weekly Maths Tasks

Please click on the link below to access this week's daily maths activities. This week is further revision on algebra, converting metric measurements, including miles and kilometres:

Weekly English Tasks (plus daily reading)

Writing Task
As many of you have not yet completed your 'Monsterology' writing project, you will have little more more time to work on this, as we are doing in school too. Once you have completed it, move on to the task below.

For those of you who have completed your 'Monsterology' project, you are going to write a recount of your memories whilst at Carlton. Begin by working through each year group you have been here and bullet point the memories from that class - this will form your plan. The number of years you have been at Carlton will determine the number of paragraphs you will have. Look back on these times by talking to you friends as the talk will prompt further memories. (Make notes of your conversations if you need to.)

This week try to get your plan together - remember words and phrases NOT full sentences for this - then move on to drafting where you will begin to expand your points into full sentences. Think carefully about how you will introduce your recount - it need only be a couple of sentences. See the links below for help with organising your ideas and the features of a recount.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS AS WE WOULD DO IN CLASS TO SHARE MEMORIES AND GET YOUR IDEAS GOING

Spellings: word endings  -ance -ant -ence -ent
These word endings often indicate whether a word is a noun or an adjective:
noun:       distance - At last, the ocean could be seen in the distance!
adjective: distant    - Is that distant boat an ocean liner or a cargo ship?
noun:       silence   -  In the corridor, there was an eerie silence...
adjective: silent      - Unsurprisingly, the silent corridor gave off an eerie atmosphere.

Activity: investigate these word endings and how they determine the word class. You could use the Year 5/6 spelling word list as a starting point then move on to a dictionary or even your reading book!

Weekly Wider Curriculum Tasks

Geography - Imaginary lines
Revision:
First jot down the names of the seven continents and five oceans. Then write the names of as many imaginary lines that you can remember.

Now watch the two short videos and read the information, ticking off the key words and names that you could remember and adding in those that you couldn't and think about the difference between a globe, map and atlas.

Next, compare two coastal locations by watching and listening carefully to another video - this is a very interesting activity as it compares the lives of two children a similar age to you.

Finally, work your way through the three activities to test your knowledge about the World you live in.

Science -

Revise inheritance by watching the clip and doing the quiz. Compile a list of characteristics you have inherited from your mum, then your dad. Think about whether any of these have also been inherited form your grandparents. Do your siblings have the same inherited characteristics?

Now think about things that are different about you from other members of your family - those that have not been inherited and what you will not be able to pass on to your offspring - the things that make you unique.

DT - Four week project (extended)
For those of you completing your DT project here is the example evaluation sheet to help you consider the things that you feel would improve your final product. Remember to be critical with an aim to upgrade.

If you did not have the tools or materials to actually build your project, think about how you could improve it. This may mean using a different material or more secure fixing or perhaps something more aesthetic like a change of colour or texture.
Well done everyone - please send in photos of your efforts.

RE - Christianity
Those of you still working on your project of Christianity in you local area, well done. Please send in pics of your work- this will be the last week.

For those who have completed this, research the Ten Commandments and write them out for display on this blog (if you haven't already done this), then think about our school rules: BE READY, BE SAFE, BE KIND. How do these help us to live better lives, both in school and out of school? Discuss the idea of beliefs, laws and rules with your family and the impact they have on our daily lives. What would life be like without them? There will be some fantastic talk going on around the dinner table this week!

Computing:
Visit this page and learn more about keeping safe when using the internet - it is very important that you know as much as possible about this. There are four activities to do and I guarantee you will enjoy them - so have fun!

Picture News -

Story: Many statues around the world have been questioned for their purpose and value in recent weeks.

Question: Why do we have statues?

DO SOME STARGAZING: SPOT A SHOOTING STAR; SPY A PLANET FROM YOUR GARDEN; EVERY NIGHT THERE IS A DIFFERENT STORY UP THERE!

Thank you to those of you who are emailing some of your work and activities to me. If you haven't sent anything in yet, I would love to see what you are doing. Please email photos to:

School learning

Here is a selection of work done by the children attending school - we hope you enjoy looking at it.

Chloe has worked hard on her prefix spellings (look at the wonderful presentation) and George created a fabulous pendulum painting in Forest schools.
Harri completed his Science Evolution glossary - great handwriting Harri - and Millie worked on her reading comprehension.

Hermione did a great job on her maths all week - some super mathematical discussions took place!

Cameron drew a fabulous sketch of his monster as part of his writing 'Monsterology' project.

The detail and shading helps to share his intended descriptive writing when he starts to put his image into words.

We are all looking forward to reading your finished piece Cameron.

After completing her work Geography work on
Time Zones, Samantha showed her
understanding in the form of a clock face where the British time is shown at the time in another country - can you
guess where it is?

How To Avoid Conflict At Home - a post for parents

We are all aware of the stresses of the current situation. With that in mind, here is an interesting article from Bitesize  with some tips on how to keep household harmony during the pandemic which we hope is useful to parents.

Memories for Virtual Leavers' Assembly

Hello everyone! As you and your parents now know, our intention is to create a Virtual Leavers' Assembly for us all to enjoy and celebrate your time at Carlton Primary. Having sat through six years of Leavers' Assemblies (the majority of you), you know that one of most looked forward to elements is the memories section.
We would love for all of you to send in your most poignant memory of your time here. For some there will be over six years of memories, others a few and for some just one or two. However, the length of time you have been with us is not quite as important as the actual time you have been together.
So, call or face-time your friends and chat about what you can remember. Think about each year group you have been in and each teacher and teaching assistants you have had. Then reflect on the visits or visitors that were part of each year. Below are listed some things to help you, but chatting to your friends will help more. Have fun reminiscing then choose one memory to share: it may be a confession, a sporting or musical memory, an art or science memory, a forest schools or DT memory - there are endless things you have done, you just need to talk about school and they will come flooding back!
Suggestions:

Cricket Day        Yorkshire Wildlife Park        School Plays        Sports Day
Robin Hood's Bay            Robinwood                Dragon Days
Selby Abbey            Learning Assembly        Zulu Nation            Author Visits
Dementia First - Drax        Archie Project        Trixie the Dino

We are all looking forward to receiving your lovely memories and to sharing them with the school community and your families. Please enjoy the moment of reflecting on your time at Carlton and be proud of the progress you have made during your time here.
We miss you and send our very best thoughts and love to you all,
Mrs Whisker and Mrs Gay.☺💕

Samantha's home learning

Here we have a wonderful set of examples of Samantha's home learning showing just how much work she has covered. She has produced a fabulous leaflet to show her understanding of Christianity which is packed with facts and she has shared a couple of pages from her Battle of Hastings booklet - one showing a super detail sketch for her cover page. Samantha has also done a great poster of plural spelling rules (colourful and informative) and her PSHCE work.

Well done Samantha - I am very impressed with all of your conscientious work.

Summer Term Week 9

Weekly Maths Tasks

Please click on the link below to access this week's daily maths activities. This week is revision of find a rule, algebra: expressions, substitution and percentages:

Weekly English Tasks (plus daily reading)

Writing Task This is week two of your 'Monsterology' writing project. Now you have your toolkit and sentence ideas, you can begin to write your information text. Take care with your planning and remember to talk it through with someone in your house. Drawing your monster and a map of where it lives will help you to bring it to life. Don't forget to keep proof reading as you go along and improving vocabulary, sentence structure, openers, punctuation etc to make sure you engage your reader. Good luck!

Reading comprehension:  Father's Day - choose the activity most suitable to you.
(★ Easier ★★ Middle  ★★★ More challenging)

Spellings - using prefixes
Adding a prefix to a root word changes the meaning of the word. The rule for adding a prefix is: just add it! Don't change or miss out any letters. This means that sometimes adding a prefix causes a double letter:
dis + satisfy = dissatisfy

Activity: Using the list of prefixes below, add them to root words to create new ones. Think about how each prefix changes the meaning of the words. How many words can you find for each prefix? Is one prefix more popular than the others? Does adding any of the prefixes double up a letter? Underline these words to remind you to double up!

Weekly Wider Curriculum Tasks

Geography -
Continuing our geography topic - Imaginary lines
What other imaginary lines there be in our world... jot down your ideas.

Time Zones
Watch the video, read the information then complete the quiz.
Show your understanding by calculating the time in various countries compared to times in your day. For example, what time would you be getting up in Sydney, Australia, if you woke up at 7am here? If it was 1.30 pm in the UK, what time would it be in New York? Draw up a table to show the time differences.

Science -

Evolution
What can you remember about Evolution? We are continuing to revise what we learned in the first term. Once again, focus on the scientific terms and how they are spelled. Have a go at the challenge to test your knowledge. Create your own glossary explaining the scientific terms from this week and last week.

DT - Four week project
Continuing your DT project: now you have built your design, it is time for evaluating! You all did a wonderful job of this very important part of DT when finalising your Yurt work. Look carefully at your product and think about points that were successful, things that don't really work, things that could be improved. Look at the sheet example to help you. Be critical with an aim to improve.

If you did not have the tools or materials to actually build your project, think about how you could improve it. This may mean using a different material or more secure fixing or perhaps something more aesthetic like a change of colour or texture.
Some people are not yet ready to evaluate - this is fine as it shows you are working through the project carefully. With this in mind, this evaluation will be repeated next week. Please don't rush - I have been receiving pictures of some very promising work!

RE - Christianity
Keep working on your ongoing project of Christianity in you local area. If you live close to the churches in Carlton village, you could visit each one and compare their features. Think about or research why and how they are different.

Otherwise, research the Ten Commandments and write them out for display on this blog.

French -
Bonjour Trent Class! This week please research Bastille Day.

One of the most important dates in France is the 14th July. In French, this date is le quatorze juillet or la Fête Nationale Française. In English, it is called Bastille Day. Why is it called Bastille Day? Well, a long time ago, there was a prison in Paris called Bastille Saint-Antoine.

Then using your skills produce a PowerPoint, leaflet or poster to entice others to learn about it.
Here are two quiz worksheets attached for you to have a go!

Miss you all!
Mrs Mackintosh

Picture News -

Story: Following a three-month closure period, Chester Zoo and many other zoos have been allowed to reopen.

Question: Should zoos have been allowed to reopen earlier?
