Chloe's home school learning

Chloe has been working on her science, completing the diagram and explaining what all the nutrients are, why they are important to the human body and where they can be found.

She has also completed the maths work, including some very challenging questions which she worked through methodically and carefully.

For her writing project, Chloe has applied the features worked on in the build up to persuade her reader about the effectiveness of her gadget,which supports her sketch.

Spellings: Word webs

This week we are going to build up a word web as a strategy for learning tricky spellings.

Using the root word sign as the centre of your web, you will add a prefixes and suffixes to make new words with new meanings around that root word and build up the web (you should finish with a poster full of words that have the root word within it). For example:

                                    designers                  designing

redesign     sign      design

                                        designer               designed

Aim for fifty words! Remember that you can add a suffix onto a suffix and a prefix onto a prefix as long at is has meaning! I wonder who can achieve the most words on their poster - all correctly spelled of course! Use colour if you would like to make your poster more interesting. Choose 10 of your words and put them into complex sentences. Can you get all 10 into one meaningful sentence?

History - The Norman Conquest
This is our final session on the Vikings.

1. Read the comic strip.

2. Choose one of the battles mentioned and research it. (If you researched the Battle of Stamford Bridge last week research the Battle of Hastings this week.)

3. Share your learning (you could create a comic strip as used in the clip but this can be done in any way you choose; remember that blog posts are more effective if illustrated). 

Science -This week we will be revising life cycles

Watch the two video clips, then work through the two activities. Next focus on the human life cycle - make sure that you learn, use, understand and can spell the scientific terms! Remember to test yourself by completing the two quizzes at the end. Can you show the human life cycle in a labelled diagram to share with your peers?

DT - Four week project
Continuing your DT project: now your research and designing is complete, it is time to test out your ideas regarding possible materials and how these could be joined. It is always sensible to test out your ideas so any necessary modifications can be made before the next stage of building. Now is a good time to reflect back once again on our Mongolian yurt project and the testing our materials afternoon we had. Gather together any possible materials and joining tools and fixings, and have fun testing your ideas. Make notes on what works and what needs to be reconsidered either on your design or a separate sheet. This is also an opportunity to note down anything you will need to gather over the next week when you will build your chosen animal home/church/other construction.

If you do not feel you have the tools or materials to actually build your project, you can still test your ideas out using paper, empty cereal boxes, water bottles etc and create a prototype.

RE - Christianity
Keep working on your ongoing project of Christianity in you local area. You could visit one of the churches and photograph any Christian symbols you find there and note similarities and differences between them.

Billy's home learning

Billy has designed a fantastic looking Viking longboat for his DT project - I am looking forward to seeing the prototype!









He has also explained what Danegeld is in great detail and completed it with a fantastic illustration.

His explanation of how nutrients and water are absorbed in the body, along with the functions of organs as these travel through the body, is clear and accurate.

He visited Barlow Common with his family to collect sticks for his spider catcher -combining fun with school work! Great knot trying Billy!

And an excellent result! I wonder how many spiders you will catch?

Billy has also been learning how to use a BBQ to cook a meal for his family and how to make a great cup of tea - Mum and Dad are delighted with these new skills! Well done Billy - lots of new learning.

Millie's home learning

Millie has made a great start to her English.

Her poster is detailed, and shows her prior work
and her diagram is clearly labelled and gives us 
and idea of what is to come!

 
She has worked hard on her maths and completed the challenges.

Her history is informative and clearly set out as well as colourful and appropriately illustrated.

Millie has used scientific language and explained this in her colourful diagram and explanation.

Her RE work is thorough, covering the various forms of Christianity, its beliefs and festivals. All beautifully presented in the form of a leaflet. 

Finally, she has designed her DT project and made a spider catcher. A great week's work Millie! Well done!

Black Lives Matter

Parents: you may like to read through and discuss this post with your children.

There have been several nights of protests and violent clashes between police and protesters as demonstrations have swept across cities in the US and other cities around the world. The protests in Minneapolis began in reaction to the death of a man named George Floyd after he was stopped by police officers. The protests have now spread across the country to cities including New York, LA, Chicago and Philadelphia. While many protests have been peaceful, many places have seen rioting, looting and violence and President Trump has said he will call in the army if things aren't brought back under control. Nature watch by Elizabeth

Elizabeth has been out and about Carlton with her family noting all things natural, specifically the wildlife and the new life that has begun to emerge.

Here she has watched the signets hatch on Carlton Ponds and being looked after by their parents. She has also seen them take to the water as they learned to swim and begin the first steps of looking after themselves. Can you spot the picture of the damsel fly in the photo below? A gorgeous iridescent blue! What have you seen when you have been out and about?

Forest Schools Follow up Activity

Make a spider web catcher

Some people are afraid of spiders but they help us by eating insect pests and are fascinating creatures to what, especially when spinning intricate webs! You can safely get close to one by creating your own web catcher.

You will need
3 medium sized straight twigs
1 longer stick
String or elastic band

1. Create a triangle shape with the twigs and secure the corners with the string or elastic bands
2. Attach the longer stick to the triangle in one corner and find an area in your garden to stick your web catcher in, preferably near a Bush or plant. The best time to check your web catcher is in the morning.

I would love to see any pictures of the spiders and webs that use your catchers, you could make a note of their markings to help identify them!

Raphael's home learning and new hobby

Raphael has worked on his History: learning about life as a Viking and about how Viking society was structured.

To show his understanding he has written a diary entry as a Viking child, explaining every day life.

He has also drawn a diagram to show the hierarchy of Viking society.


Raphael also undertaken a new pastime during half term, supported by his Dad: falconry! Amazing pictures Raphael.
