Maths Challenges: For those of you who would like to do a little more maths, try these maths challenges. Contact a friend to complete them too and compare your answers - try to work out who was correct and why. Remember - being able to explain shows deeper understanding!

Weekly English Tasks (plus daily reading) (to be done in any order) 

Writing Task  This link will take you to a complete unit of work which is to be completed over two weeks as it is most comprehensive and will take you through various tasks which build up to a final piece of work - very similar to the process we use in class. Please take your time to check over that each activity is done to the best of your ability before moving on to the next one, as you now know that each one impacts on the next. There is absolutely no rush as you have TWO WEEKS to produce a quality piece of work. Remember to check vocabulary, grammar, spelling and punctuation at each step. Good luck!

Spellings: Generating words from prefixes and roots
As we have been learning in class, etymology relates to the history of words, thereby finding word origins and their meaning. Thinking about the word: arachnophobia, arachno being the prefix and -phobia being the root, arachno comes from the Greek word arachnid, meaning spider, and phobia comes from Greek -phobos, meaning fear or dislike. Therefore, we have the word arachnophobia, from Greek origins, meaning fear or dislike of spiders.
Activity: what other 'phobia' words are there?
List them in a table giving the word, prefix, root, origin and meaning:

Weekly Wider Curriculum Tasks

History - How did the Vikings fight?

Listen to, and read, the information, then complete these two activities:

1. Draw a berserker and label his weapons and armour

2. Compare a Viking longboat and a knorr. Write an explanation sharing the differences and explaining why those differences were necessary.

Science - This week you are encouraged to complete as many exciting experiments as you can from a list of twelve! They are all Physics based and use every day objects, many from the kitchen. Look at the explanations carefully for each one, trying to spot the scientific vocabulary, and make a 'dictionary' of the terms you find. On the 'Lava Lamp' activity, you are asked to use peanuts, but I used raisins which are perhaps safer and more interesting due to their irregular shape. HAVE FUN and send in your pics!

DT - Make a Viking longboat or a Viking piece of armour - here are examples but feel free to design your own. Again, have fun and send in your pics!

🌟Mrs Burton's Ongoing Project - Who is your hero?🌟

When I was in primary school I did a project all about my hero. It took me weeks! I learned lots of facts, made a booklet, drew and cut out pictures, and I can still remember facts about Gary Winston Lineker now! So it's your turn, choose someone who you admire, learn all about them, then show what you know in whatever way you want e.g scrapbook, PowerPoint, poster. This should be a project you work on over the next few weeks rather than complete in 1 session

Family learning

The Quinn family are being most industrious, working hard together and obviously enjoying it. 

Eleanor and Ella have created colourful and very individual 'Stay at Home' posters to remind us about the rules we need to comply to in order to keep safe.

They are also making sure that they keep fit!

If 'Le Tour' cannot come to us - then we will get on our bikes and go to it!

Finally, Eleanor has painted a stunning picture, which has been framed ready to be given as a gift for a very special occasion.

Obviously we cannot reveal the surprise here but behind the choice of subject is a touching and emotional message for the recipient. 


Someone is in for a wonderful surprise in a few weeks time!

I was thrilled to see her work on Picture News as I always enjoy their topics and I particularly enjoyed reading her information on Sikhism because I learned something new too!

Nature observation

Chloe has observed a pair of blackbirds nesting in her garage. What a great opportunity to spend time watching the developments unfold. 
Questions:
What does a blackbird make its nest out of?
What is the incubation period for a blackbird's egg?
What is the colour and markings of a blackbird's egg?
When are the chicks likely to hatch?
How many chicks do you predict will hatch?
How many chicks will survive?
What are the main predators?
Will the nesting pair have more than one brood?
Which parent will incubate the eggs most?
Which parent will feed the chicks the most?
How can we differentiate between a male and female blackbird?
What does a blackbird feed on?
What other facts can you find out about a blackbird?
Who can draw a labelled life cycle of a blackbird or create a labelled observational drawing?
Hopefully we will be looking at the chicks being fed shortly!

What event is happening in your garden that you could turn into a project? Think about insects, earthworms, snails, woodlice and other invertebrates. Get a magnifying glass out and get curious!

Spellings: Homophones

Using the homophone list in your home learning pack that you will have worked on, ask your parent/carer/older sibling to dictate sentences to check your understanding of spelling these words.

For example, the sentences for the homophone pair 'brake/break' could be:

The driver had to brake hard when the fox ran across the road.

After driving for several hours, the driver needed a break.

Remember that all the words in each sentence should be spelled correctly and punctuation should be accurate.

Science - What plants can you find in your garden or on your daily exercise?  List the common names of the plants you can see and research the Latin names for each of them. Can you remember the binomial system devised by Carolus Linnaeus?

Art - Choose one of the plants you have found and become a botanical artist by drawing it carefully. You could include exploded diagrams of specific parts - use a magnifying glass to help with this.

Egg decorating for fun!

Easter activities

Chloe has decorated a beautiful Easter wreath.

Chloe has also helped to make a new work station for her to study at. During the process she learned many new DIY skills. What a superb result Chloe, well done!

Billy and his family have created a 'lockdown family platter' to mark the unprecedented situation we all find ourselves in. He has shared the before and after images.

Easter parentmail re holiday work

We suggest that over this 2 week period each child does the following :

• Daily physical activity (keeping safe and follow social distancing guidelines) 
• Keeping  a journal about Easter (age appropriate). Taking photos of any Easter fun, including the arrival of the Easter Bunny,  writing a few sentences about their day, 
• Daily reading – solo reading,  being read to, reading to someone, audiobook, 
• Practising number bonds to 10 (e.g. Hit the button) 
• Visits to the class and school blogs – adding comments to existing posts and accessing links to other recommended websites from the links on these pages. 
• Household chores and jobs
• Enjoy some downtime and free play
• Writes letter, make calls, zoom/skpye/facetime  etc. to friends and family members – virtual social contact is important for us all!

We will not be setting any further work over the 2 week ‘Easter Holiday’, but of course you can continue to exhaust the home learning packs and previous homework menu if you wish.

After Easter/ from Monday 20^th April  we will be then sending some further tasks out (likely to be on a  weekly basis) for children to complete at home.

Please note that during the Easter period I am advising staff to also have some quiet time with their families and loved ones (other than on duty in school, when we are opening for children of key /frontline workers). Therefore email correspondence  and blog posts may well not be responded to until 20^th April.

We couldn't let Easter go by without asking you to show us your egg decorating skills. So, for your final challenge before the holidays we would like you to decorate an egg, just for fun. It's not a competition, just have some fun with it.

Creative Challenge - Blindfold Drawing!

You will need:

• blindfold
• paper
• pencil
• laughter

What to do:

• Choose an image, object, sketch - your choice
• Look at it closely - taking in all the detail
• Put the blindfold on - start drawing

How this fun family challenge will benefit you:

• Imagining an object with your mind's eye stimulates your spatial thinking
• It improves your memory
• It improves your problem solving skills
• It also helps you to notice more detail in book illustrations
• Laughing together is a tonic which bonds families and friends
